Introduction to Check Conversion

The use of check conversion - also known as an Accounts Receivable Entry (ARC), Point of Purchase (POP), or Back Office Conversion (BOC) in banking terms - is among the fastest growing types of ACH applications due to its enormous benefits. It has added efficiency to the nation's payment system, generated savings for businesses, and led to more privacy, fewer errors, and greater protections for consumers.

The check conversion process is simply a method of processing payments. Consumers and businesses retain the choice of using a paper check to make a payment; however, your business may choose to use the ACH Network to process that payment electronically. Consumers and businesses always receive notice of the check conversion on their billing statements for ARC or at the point of sale for POP or BOC.

Initially, your customers may have questions and concerns about the check conversion process, and may contact you for clarification. We hope you will use the information and training resources on this site to educate your staff about check conversion handled through the ACH Network and to explain the process to your customers.

While the check conversion applications are processed similarly over the ACH Network, it is important to understand the differences between forms of check conversion, and in what environments each is used. Use this guide when speaking to your customers and financial institution representatives.
